Run from the Pen

By: Ben Bielert

If I could advise you of one thing,
It would be to run from the pen,
The pen will seduce you, draw you in,
Make you think that you can win.

The pen will allow you to create entire worlds,
And its power is so enticing, tantalizing, delicious,
You can empower kings, create heroes, construct beauties,
But you must remember to run from the pen.

Because my dear, dear child the pen will curse you,
It will fill you with a longing that you would never have known,
Had you never reached for it and scrawled your first words,
Had you never aspired to the life that the pen can only give to few,
You may have been happy, you poor soul.

The life of those who live by the pen is the life of the dreamer,
You will spend your days everywhere and nowhere at all,
You will be on the top of misty mountain peaks where beasts fly,
You will sit by crystalline waters where chromatic fish swim,
When you should be here and now, you will be there and then.

All of these curses will be yours if a life you live by the pen,
So cast away the promise, the tantalizing fantasy,
Run from the pen my dear, sweet child,
Be bogged down in reality.
